The next night, Penny pinned her last curl in place just as her doorbell rang. Her stomach flip-flopped. East had called earlier today. He had an evening cancelation so he’d asked to squeeze in a late night date. The past two days had shoved hesitation into what should have been an easy yes response. But she owed it to herself to pursue this relationship. To prove that a man like East would pursue her. So she’d donned her black wrap dress, tamed her hair, and perfected her makeup.

The doorbell rang again as she hustled down the hall, snagging on her turquoise flats. She managed to open the door before the third ring.

“I was starting to worry you weren’t home.” East stood on her front step, every blond hair in place. His dark green shirt pulled against his chest, and a pair of perfectly worn jeans hung off his hips while the full wattage of his smile aimed directly at her.

She returned it. “Spin class got out late. It put me behind. Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. You look great.” His eyes traveled along the scooped neckline of her dress, past her waist, to her bare legs and back up again.

Penny turned to grab her purse off the small table by her door before he caught the blush on her cheeks. She’d known this dress showed off her new curves.

“You hungry?” East moved back as she stepped out and turned to lock the door.

“Starved.”

His lips brushed the back of her neck. “So am I.”

Penny swiveled, and he winked. “For dinner, of course.”

He grabbed her hand on the way to his car, his thumb stroking her wrist. They reached his silver Mazda Miata, and he let go, rounded the car, and slipped into the driver’s side. Penny slid into the passenger’s seat.

East glanced at her as he pulled into traffic. “You did spin again today?”

“Yeah. I really like it.”

“How are your legs?”

“Fine. Definitely better than after yesterday’s class.”

He flipped on the stereo. Hard rock beat the air. “Yeah. Sorry about that. I didn’t realize the class was advanced.” He tapped his steering wheel. “Adam said you handled it well. He also said Jonah was there helping you.”

Was he jealous? “I wouldn’t have been able to make it through the class without him.”

“Glad he was there then.” He merged onto 90 East, giving her leg a little squeeze. “I don’t have anything to be worried about, do I?”

“We’re just friends. Like I’ve said before.”

“I don’t get that vibe from Jonah.”

“Well, we are, so no worries.” But did this mean he wanted to be exclusive? She was so not good at this.

East checked his blind spot before merging into the left lane. “Glad to hear it. I was worried I might have some competition.” Then he laughed.

She must have missed the joke. And she didn’t want to be the butt of one, so she’d shelve her relationship questions until later. “So where are we going?”

“You like heights?”

“Roof at Wit?”

“You got it.”

She glanced at her watch. Seven. Even on a Wednesday, it would be hard getting in at this time.
